Ear Pain (Otalgia)

What is Ear Pain?

Ear Pain, or Otalgia, can occur due to a problem inside the ear or outside the ear. It may be easy to resolve or can be a sign of a more serious condition.

What causes Ear Pain?

Pain in the ear can be caused by problems in the ear itself, but can also originate in the jaw, neck or throat. Common causes of ear pain within the ear itself are ear infections or abnormal pressure in the ear (Eustachian tube dysfunction).

The jaw joint, or the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is often the reason for ear pain originating outside the ear. When this joint isn’t working properly, it can cause persistent pain. Neck conditions can also be the problem. Other causes range from tonsillitis to throat cancer.

How is Ear Pain treated?

As there are so many possible causes of ear pain, the first course of action is to identify its source and put together an effective treatment plan accordingly. Reaching a diagnosis may involve examination of the ear, jaw and throat as well as hearing and ear pressure tests.
